What exactly is "flight profile" on mobile/cell phones?

I have a Nokia 6131 which has a flight profile. Next week I am flying to the USA, does this mean I can have my phone on during the flight if it is on flight profile? What exactly is flight profile?

The Flight / Offline mode on a phone is a mode where the phone doesn't transmit or receive any calls, texts or data of any kind and can be used for anything that doesn't require the phone network (e.g.: Gaming, Office functions etc...)


Some airlines now ackowledge this as a legitimate function and will allow you to use the phone in this mode at cruising altitude. However, some airlines are still to get up to speed with this and certain cabin crew may not be aware of what it means. It's probably best to take the phone manual along to explain to cabin crew what flight mode is.
